We believe in taking actions that have a measurable impact on nature conservation rather than just engaging in conservation discussions.
Our mission is to raise awareness about climate change and the importance of local biodiversity through sustainable and responsible tourism.
Our model is founded on the principles of sustainable tourism, promoting a harmonious coexistence with nature through regenerative practices. We actively involve grassroots stakeholders in ecosystem restoration aimed at biodiversity conservation and the promotion of low-carbon tourism practices. The implementation of various components of this conservation-oriented tourism model can be observed in numerous properties (such as homestays and farm stays) that have adopted these practices throughout Idukki district.
This hybrid eco-agro tourism model emphasizes the significance of microhabitats for various flora and fauna. This refugia concept can enhance several ecotourism practices, including bird watching, afforestation, organic farming, apiculture, herpetofauna tourism, and butterfly and dragonfly observation. Consequently, these units serve as vital conservation centers of considerable ecological value.
Our model functions not just as lodging but also as a dynamic knowledge hub for promoting biodiversity conservation. We design activities and programs that engage both visitors and local communities, allowing them to learn and stay updated on various ecosystem services. Through workshops, webinars, educational programs, and hands-on experiences, guests gain a deeper understanding of environmental issues and discover practical ways to contribute to positive change.
This innovative model promotes environmental stewardship while fostering a sense of connection and responsibility among travelers and local residents. By integrating conservation principles into everyday practices and experiences, these units empower individuals to make meaningful contributions to the planet's well-being.
I am Subish Sebastian, an alumnus of the Wildlife Institute of India, with over 12 years of experience in wildlife conservation and ecotourism. As a nature enthusiast, I believe in the potential of responsible and sustainable tourism to foster community-oriented conservation. I hold a Master's in Communication from Bharathiyar University and a Master's in Wildlife Science from the Wildlife Institute of India. For my master's dissertation, I conducted an assessment of the recreational value of the Periyar Tiger Reserve and examined how ecotourism influences the conservation attitudes of local communities. After graduation, I actively worked with local communities and developed a sustainable tourism model called Monsoon Retreats Ecostay, aimed at promoting local biodiversity conservation.
I played a key role in establishing a conversation-oriented tourism organization called Living Earth. This responsible travel enterprise is dedicated to creating a replicable model for climate-resilient community conservation. Using less harmful construction techniques, we developed a carbon-neutral eco-stay within an agroecosystem that promotes organic farming, food security, diverse livelihood options, and the conservation of native flora and fauna, all while supporting the local community.
Living Earth collaborates with various agricultural farms, farm stays, homestays, and resorts to help them transition into sustainable properties following the eco-stay model. The process begins with biodiversity assessments conducted in partnership with property owners and volunteers, with data entered into the India Biodiversity Portal, a partner of Living Earth. Additionally, we initiate apiculture projects to enhance bee diversity and crop yields, providing ownership of beehives and income opportunities to destitute women in the local community. We also promote orchid-friendly tourism through the establishment of orchid trails to conserve native orchids.
I designed a river conservation tourism package aimed at educating, conserving, and restoring the Periyar River, working closely with local communities along its course. Our team at Monsoon Retreats Eco-stay consists of experienced professionals dedicated to providing exceptional service. From our front desk staff to our housekeeping team, we collaborate to ensure that every guest's needs are met.
“Environmentally responsible travel to relatively undisturbed natural areas allows visitors to enjoy and appreciate nature, along with its cultural features, both past and present. This type of tourism promotes conservation, minimizes negative visitor impact, and encourages beneficial socio-economic involvement from the local population.” - IUCN, 96
That’s why ecotourism is considered an important tool for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. However, what happens when an ecologically fragile landscape becomes popular? A significant number of external players, such as resort groups, may start their own ventures, thereby taking a substantial share of income that could otherwise benefit the local economy. This phenomenon, known as leakage, leads to a draining of local resources, directly affecting the socio-economic stability of local communities.
In ecotourism, linkages and leakages serve as indicators to assess local community involvement, including their empowerment, participation in capacity building, and awareness of their socio-economic conditions. The ultimate goal of sustainable tourism is to strengthen the network of biodiversity conservation.
Most locals residing near protected areas primarily rely on agriculture for their livelihood. The monsoon season plays a crucial role in shaping the agricultural landscape, both spatially and temporally. When monsoon conditions are favorable, harvests are abundant, positively impacting the socio-economic well-being of the local community. Conversely, if rainfall is excessive or insufficient, farmers face significant challenges.
To mitigate such issues and enhance their socio-economic status, it is essential to empower local communities through various ecotourism programs that promote sustainable development, especially in landscapes like the Periyar Tiger Reserve, where tourism plays a vital role.
Monsoon Retreats Eco-stay is located in the heart of a lush cardamom plantation, where we aim to blend agro-tourism with eco-tourism. We have planted a large number of native plants to attract local biodiversity while maintaining our agricultural practices to promote awareness of both agriculture and ecology. As a result, we have attracted over 84 bird species out of the 330 reported from the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The same is true for various species of reptiles, insects, and arachnids, with ongoing surveys to gather data on their populations.
Nights here are serene, allowing you to experience the true essence of the jungle, where you can sleep to the soothing sounds of cicadas. Trekking through the sensitive areas of the Periyar Tiger Reserve and bamboo rafting on the calm waters of Periyar Lake will remain cherished memories.
We also have a large hall that is used for workshops on biodiversity conservation, conservation photography, and yoga retreats. Monsoon Retreats is designed to minimally impact the area's aesthetic and biological diversity. Our cottages are elevated 10 to 15 feet above the ground, enabling the local farming community to focus on agriculture without sacrificing valuable agricultural land for tourism infrastructure. Instead, they can gain additional income from tourism.
In summary, we strive to blend agriculture with eco-tourism sustainably, avoiding the depletion of land for resorts or homestays that could otherwise be used for agricultural production. Promoting sustainability with minimal negative impact on nature is essential in today’s world.
**Current Focus of Monsoon Retreats**
Monsoon Retreats is currently dedicated to species recovery programs, including the establishment of an amphibian conservation park. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the ecological and economic significance of amphibians while creating an ecosystem that supports their survival in human-modified landscapes. We are collaborating with the San Diego County Orchid Society for the conservation of endemic orchids through the Orchid Friendly Tourism initiative. Additionally, we are partnering with the Wildlife Trust of India for amphibian conservation efforts, promoting native honeybees for pollination, and working with the Responsible Tourism Mission Kerala to advocate for ethical and sustainable tourism. These efforts highlight our commitment to nature conservation.
**Goals and Objectives**
The Western Ghats, recognized as a biodiversity hotspot, faces significant threats from rapid and unscientific infrastructure development, forest encroachment, land use changes, and excessive pesticide use. As a consequence, our biodiversity is experiencing a dramatic decline, with many endemic species now classified as threatened. Given the global importance of our mission, community-oriented conservation efforts like ours are essential for preserving the diversity and vibrancy of our planet. By fostering a deeper connection to nature and promoting sustainable practices, we aim to create a more resilient and harmonious relationship between humanity and the environment.
Our model initiative plays a pivotal role in environmental conservation and contributes to achieving other sustainable development goals. It can be easily replicated in homestays and farm stays across the region. In the era of climate change and species loss, this responsible tourism initiative has the potential to transform each tourism unit into a refuge for local biodiversity, with the host community serving as ambassadors for conservation. Tourists can also become channels to support these noble conservation efforts.
Amazing Stay in a limited budget.
Beautiful homestay in an amazing location with best services, definitely recommend. The rooms were very well maintained and washrooms, hygienic. Food was very tasty and they ensured they check with us on our food needs before the food time. The proprietor being a wildlife conservationist had a great knowledge on the places around thekkady and he ensured we had a great time for a day's time we had to spend in thekkady. He provided the best suggestions to make our stay worthwhile. Must visit property.

Surreal Destination for a Weekend Getaway
We walked into this place feeling surreal. Although situated in Kumily town, Monsoon Retreat is truly an Eco stay surrounded by lush green and elevated cottages to mirror tree houses preserving the flora and fauna of the place. The steps to the cottages are a bit steep and can be a challenge for aged people.
As a sustainable enterprise, they provided us with essential amenities and delicious food. This is a place for nature enthusiasts and not for someone seeking luxury. The bathroom was clean, and the rooms were spacious, accommodating 3 pax. We have to let them know in advance regarding the time and choice of menu for our meal inorder for them to serve us hot. The staff Mr. Murali and his team were kind and helpful. The owner Mr. Subish, a wildlife conservationist, took care of all our needs from welcoming us till our departure. We had messaged him before we actually made the booking and he was very helpful in clarifying our doubts and letting us know how to plan our other activities. The location is close to Periyar Tiger Reserve hence an ideal place to stay for those planning on adventurous activities. This is a place for those seeking out peace and harmony from our otherwise monotonous routine.

Awesome Stay and great services with friendly host
This is one of the most amazing stay I have ever experienced. I have stayed in resorts and budget hotels in my trips, but this stay was something completely new for me. Do not miss this stay if you are visiting Thekkady. They have limited rooms available, but the idea of planning this kind of stay without removing any trees or plants and the efforts that Subish has taken to build this is really appreciable. The atmosphere is so good, hence you will surely feel a stress free holiday away from your normal routine life. They provide homemade food for breakfast, and also provide us dinner on request for an extra charge. Their coffee is too good and very addictive, so fair warning. If you are a family\couple\sole traveler and want to have a different holiday stay along with nature, I would surely recommend this place. They also help us in guiding the tours and visits to different places around Thekkady. Unlike other lodges or chain of hotels, this place is completely maintained and hosted by one family who encourage eco tourism at Thekkady and they do it with passion that is clearly felt. We had no regrets in choosing this stay and would definitely recommend.
Mr Kris k, Australia
It's time to write up a little long review about Monsoon Retreats Ecostay, Thekkady. That we went in April 2021,as 13members of our family. From welcoming till we check out all the guidance was given by property owner cum wildlife researcher Subish. That was really great and we had special tea made from organic spices taken from same place(Because the stay is inside the Cardomom Field) was just awesome. It is basically a treehouse stay with separate dining hall. It was not a hotel food but we had a nice home cooked breakfast and dinner, it's really really Good try there. Heard and felt the dev drops on nights, if u are a nature lover or planning for a very refreshing stay then you will love the Nature's sound it's a gifted nature stay. And Subish's guidance for sight seeing plans and arrangements was excellent, because we don't know anything in Thekkady before. And here in thekkady if we won't start earlier in the morning we will miss out more things, if we miss the time Subish will watsapp us like "it's time to go bro :)". I didn't see anyone before like this much caring. In our stay we had campfires, barbecues. This is fully a nature based stay with nature sounds. So, definitely it is a must try stay if u are planning for Thekkady Vacation.
Mr Ramsadeesh, Pondicherry
Mr. Subish, a dedicated nature worker and lover, created a piece of heaven on Earth. Just come and stay in this pure energy field and come out refreshed and relaxed. Mr. Subish organized a full-day trip to surrounding eco farms and eco tea plantations which was very revealing. Learn about his unique ideas and work done for the protection of the jungle.
Food was made with eco ingredients only and with great care and love. They have a very nice yoga hall.

Perfect Place to Stay in Thekkady
Monsoon is very close to the main attractions in Thekkady--the tiger reserve, elephant rides, Ayurvedic garden tours, but is located in a tranquil forest that feels very far away from the hustle and bustle of town. Unlike too many other lodgings in the area, it takes eco-tourism seriously, eschewing plastic bottles and preserving its surrounding habitat. The delightful cabins on stilts afford great opportunities for birdwatching. But the best part of the experience is talking to the owner, Subish, whose knowledge of local wildlife biology and ecology is extensive. His efforts to make tourism and forest management in Kerala more sustainable are truly inspirational.

Eco retreat by name and nature
This place and its host were really wonderful and the perfect way to authentically experience the jungle.Despite being told by our host Subish that he doesn't specialise in hospitality, we received an incredibly warm welcome and were well looked after our entire stay. In fact, Subish's actual specialisation in ecology and wildlife helped us to understand more than we would have done and he has used these principles in building Monsoon Retreats. The rooms and surroundings were amazing and so close to nature without in any way disrupting it. We absolutely loved our stay and our jungle jeep day around Periyar, not to mention the nighttime jungle trek where we saw some wild elephants and plenty of other amazing creatures!
